Adolescent Advisory Board
The Adolescent Advisory Board consists of teens from all 14 Washington County school districts and one Greene County district. High school students meet monthly at The Washington Hospital and provide curriculum guidance, perspectives on teen culture, and creative vision for the Outreach.
Advisory Board members have created educational information for their peers on date rape, STIs (sexually transmitted infections) and abstinence. During the 2009 - 2010 school year they hosted a youth conference at Washington and Jefferson College that includes Speed Learning. Advisory Board members selected ten pertinent topics and presented them to 9th grade attendees from community high schools.
For the 2011 - 2012 school year the Board will address the topic of Bullying Prevention...especially cyberbullying.
The strength behind Dr. Mary Jo’s service to youth for over 40 years is her respect for adolescent culture; the young people she serves are her inspiration. Listening to teens and learning from them empowers her to give then a voice. She takes call from teens every single day - on holidays, on vacation, and at 2 AM, 24/7, 365 days a year. Social media is a conduit for communication; she also teaches teens to deal with Respect Online (her 2017-2018 Ambassador for Respect theme)
Dr. Mary Jo uses social media to educate and reach out to young people.
Ask Mary Jo column
Since 2005, Dr. Mary Jo has authored the weekly column Ask Mary Jo for the newspaper Observer Reporter. Every Thursday, she responds to a question from a teen, a child, or an adult. She missed one column – during her first trip to teach in China in 2008, she was unable to obtain internet access. Through a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment in 2005, she maintains this commitment to her community and to youth.
